Ben Lewis and Sam Wigg Winfield met at university in Bristol, where they soon started DJing, the duo, now producers and living in London, manage their own club night under the ‘Real Nice’ banner.

There is a real sense of selflessness in Real Nice Recordings. It’s simple, yet honest. They’re not about finding the biggest names out there, but more about uncovering and showcasing artists that share their ambition and laid back attitude. Their amiable ethos – “We want to create a family of producers and DJs who all vibe from each others’ work, simple really” – epitomises what’s important to RNR, producing the music they love, for others to enjoy.

As well as upholding the label, 2013 has been an eventful year for the club night. Alongside their appearance at Ibiza’s infamous Space nightclub and a surprise casting on Bargain Hunt they also graced Gottwood again this year and joined the official after party in Brixton.

Their promise of showcasing “music to make you dance” sums up the boys perfectly and assures every avid house music lover that if RNR are involved, it’s bound to be a great night. The boys own track ‘Had Enough’, a collaboration with the talented Cubiq, proved to be huge, and was lauded by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong. If you haven’t already given the back catalog a listen their newest release from Croz and Krywald, ‘Set Me Free’, features rich vocals and a potent bass line that’s guaranteed to keep you moving.

We caught up with one half of Real Nice, Ben. Here’s what he had to say:

How did the record label come about?

Well, I looked around and all my friends were making good music but needed a home for it, so Sam and I stepped up to create one. It’s a very exciting time for us pushing all this new music and we’re very happy to have given a few people their debut release.

You’re based in London now, how has the move influenced your music?

No matter what music you want to listen to you can find it in London, which is a great thing. I’m trying to see more live music too. It’s so easy when working in dance music to only go to dance music events, which is a bad thing. When making “dance” tracks its good to draw from all types of music, so keeping an open ear and trying to listen to as much as possible is key.

Your ethos is simple ‘music to make you dance’, what music gets you bopping?

Every release on Real Nice Recordings has made me dance.

The scope of electronic music is becoming increasingly vast with loads of new names behind the decks, who have been the stand out acts for you in 2013?

The best set all year for me was from Disclosure, followed by Eats Everything and Skream on the Gottwood caravan at Secret Garden Party. I know that seems like quite an obvious choice, and until then I did not believe all the hype, but I was massively impressed by that set.

Other people that have been pulling it out the bag this year are Jay Shepheard, Claude Von Stroke and Pleasurekraft. The tune I can’t stop playing this week is ‘Trapped’ by Timmy P, which is also a free download on his Soundcloud. It’s too hard. All have been amazing in their own right.

And finally, what we really want to know is, if you were stranded in the woods which three items would you not be able to leave behind?

My iPhone, headphones, waterproof.

Words by: Lowri Morgan

Real Nice Recordings, also known as …

[9

post-1883","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-our-family
["GET
